General Motors Announces Two Recalls

On Thursday, January 31st, General Motors announced two separate recalls; together, they affect more than 12,000 vehicles. 8,519 Chevy Malibu sedans from the 2013 model year are being recalled over concerns on the vehicles’ rear suspensions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that one or more bolts in the suspension may not have been fastened tight enough, causing “sudden changes in the vehicle handling” which may lead to a crash (NHTSA). A spokesman for GM, Alan Adler, said no injuries or crashes have been reported thus far; the problem was caused by a supplier’s failure to inspect its subassemblies.

GM’s second recall involves 3,896 Chevy Camaro, Buick Verano, Chevy Cruze and Chevy Sonic vehicles from the 2012 model year. These vehicles have a problem with the driver side airbag, which may prevent the airbag from deploying in a crash. Alder said GM had received no notice of crashes or injuries related to this issue (although, really, it would take a crash to bring this unfortunate malfunction to light). Owners of the affected GM vehicles will receive further information from GM, and can have the faulty parts replaced at a dealership, for no additional cost.
