Motorcycles face the same risks that other motorists on the road do, however, the likelihood of these risks is increased due to how a motorcycle is built. Motorcycles, in their design, do not have all the safety features that a car has. For instance, one of the most significant safety features of a car is the surrounding steel protection that it offers drivers. Motorcycles have no surrounding protection; only the seat below them and the handles in front of them. There are also some motorcycles that do not have airbags, which poses a great risk if they actually did get in an accident. Also, they are smaller than cars on the road, and therefore can be more difficult to see in particular situations. Perhaps when a car is switching lanes and does not see that a motorcycle is traveling in between lanes of traffic – this is dangerous for the motorcyclist to begin with, but the added factor of it being much smaller than cars adds to the unpredictability of a situation and can end in a sideswipe accident.

It is much more common for motorcycles to get into accidents due to these facts, and there is evidence to back it up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published data on motorcycle accidents in 2016. They found that per vehicle miles traveled in 2016, motorcyclists’ fatalities occurred nearly 28 times more frequently than passenger car occupant fatalities in traffic crashes. Evidently, motorcycle accidents are more likely to occur than car accidents, and more fatal, as well.

The severity of these accidents is harsher than car accidents for the aforementioned reason – there is less protection. Motorcycle accidents can end in road burns, broken bones, and even amputation injuries. The lack of protection lends itself to worse injuries to the rider. This is why it is imperative to take the proper precautions as a motorcyclist. A motorcyclist should always wear the proper gear, padding, a helmet, and be sober and clear-minded when driving to lessen your chances of an accident or serious injury.
