A fracture in the neck is also referred to as a cervical fracture. While sometimes they may be minor and require routine treatment, other times it can be a very serious injury. It is rare that a broken neck forms a slight force. They are usually in response to a high-impact trauma, such as a fall or car accident.

A cervical fracture can bring a feeling of stiffness or lack of movement to the neck. You may be limited in how far or fast you can usually turn your neck. Pain may spread to other areas of the body like the shoulders, arms, and hands in the form of a tingling sensation. This is from possible nerve pressure from the backbone. Serious cases of a broken neck can result in some type of paralysis in some areas of the body. To treat a broken neck, minor fractures can be treated with a brace around the neck for 6 to 8 weeks so that the bones have time to heal themselves. For more serious fractures, surgery may be required, longer treatment and use of a brace, and possible physical therapy in the recovery stages.
