Skull fractures occur when an impact to the head is strong enough to break the cranial bone (skull). In order to treat skull fractures, the doctor will first have to evaluate the injury and the break. They may use X-rays, CT scans, or an MRI to provide an image of the bone or soft tissue. Once they have evaluated the fracture and the damage that has been done, they can treat it accordingly by factoring in the location of the fracture, the severity, the type of fracture, and any damage that may have been done to the brain.

Sometimes, fairly minor skull fractures can heal on their own or with some pain medication. Other, more serious types of skull fractures may require surgery in order to repair any damage to the brain, realign the broken bones, and make sure that the wound cannot be worsened with more movement. After the immediate treatment is complete, some fractures may still cause issues cognitively or in other respects. For more serious fractures, some people walk away with some type of minor or major disability. Unfortunately, some even result in a coma or death. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the best treatment after the immediate treatment to try to adjust yourself or get control over your life so that you can get closer to your condition prior to the accident.
