A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when there is any damage to the spinal cord resulting in a loss of motor and/or sensory function of some part or parts of the body. These result from high-energy trauma such as a motor vehicle collision, a harsh fall, or a contact sports injury. Since the spinal cord aids in the central nervous system’s (CNS) function, any damage here can cause an immense change in the affected person’s life.

After an SCI, life will certainly change in some way regardless of the type or location of the injury. Generally, incomplete SCIs show a much higher chance and extent of recovery compared to complete SCIs. The higher that the injury is, the more widespread the damage is, and the more extensive and intense that the recovery process will be – though, it is unlikely that these individuals with cervical SCIs will make a full recovery.

Individuals with SCIs will face many daily shifts in their life, based on the extent of their injury. Some effects including the following:

  • Loss or difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Chronic pain at the injury site
  • Difficulty moving, walking, or breathing
  • Insomnia or sleep apnea
  • Skin problems associated with lack of movement

You will also likely have to engage in physical therapy exercises meant to teach your body and spinal cord how to move and function again. By doing these exercises, you are learning muscle memory to teach yourself how to walk and move again. Of course, it will be difficult at first, but you can make gradual progress to where you are able to move in ways that you previously could not.

Ultimately, by speaking to your doctor regarding any physical or mental health concerns that you may have, they can assist you in reaching your goals or at least making things easier for you to deal with. You must work towards the best health that you can attain, and speak to a therapist or doctor regarding your own health. People can recover from SCIs, so doing everything in your power to work towards this goal is a great general goal to develop with your doctor as they see fit.
