A hip fracture is not the same thing as a pelvic fracture, though they are in the same vicinity. A hip fracture occurs when there is a break in the upper thigh bone (the femur) that forms the hip joint. It may be a fracture as a result of a dislocated hip where the force causes it, it may be located at the femoral neck, or it can be due to a direct break from a fall.

On the other hand, a pelvic fracture occurs when there is a break anywhere in the pelvic bone. Pelvic fractures may be located in the ilia which are the two largest pelvic bones, the ischium, and pubis which is below the ilia and contains many nerves and blood vessels, or it could be in the sockets on the sides of the pelvis.
