Mixer trucks vary in size but can typically weigh up to 30,000 pounds and can haul up to 30,000 pounds of wet concrete. This incredible amount of weight puts both the mixer truck driver and others at risk for serious, and often deadly, accidents and catastrophic injuries.

Causes of Mixer Truck Accidents

The size and weight of a mixer truck is not the only cause of mixer truck accidents however they are substantial contributing factors for a variety of reasons, including:

  • A heavily loaded mixer truck is more difficult to stop quickly. If a mixer truck operator is speeding or distracted and needs to come to a sudden stop, it may not occur.
  • The tremendous weight of a mixer truck affects vehicle handling and mixer truck rollovers are common.
  • A mixer truck that is not in good working condition can result in equipment failure. The owner and operator of the mixer truck should regularly inspect their vehicles for any signs of dangerous wear and tear that could put others at risk.
  • If a mixer truck and/or its parts are defective in design, the designer, manufacturer, and/or anyone involved in the chain of distribution of the defective product could be held liable for the injuries and damages their product caused.
  • An accident between a mixer truck that can weigh upwards of 60,000 pounds and another vehicle or bystander will not have a good outcome. Spinal cord injuries, crushing injuries, lacerations, fractures, traumatic brain injuries, and wrongful death are all possible in a mixer truck accident.
  • Tight deadlines often push mixer truck operators to engage in risky behavior. Unless a mixer truck has a separate water tank to allow for on-site mixing, concrete should be poured in an hour or less, with 90 minutes being the absolute longest. Mixer truck operators may speed or act recklessly in an attempt to deliver their concrete loads in a timely manner.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
