Before you can get a motorcycle license, you must successfully go through the permit period. A motorcycle permit still allows you on the road with a motorcycle, but with certain rules that must be followed while using it. In Illinois, a motorcycle permit allows you to operate a motorcycle on the road only during the daytime, and when accompanied by another motorcyclist who is above 21 years of age and has at least one year of experience on a motorcycle. You are able to qualify for a motorcycle permit if you are 18 years of age or older and can show the Department of Motor Vehicles a valid and current state identification. You also pass a basic written permit exam and a vision exam along with paying a fee, as well.

In the period of time that you have a permit, you are learning what is customary in the operation of riding a motorcycle. You are learning how to apply the rules of the road to the real-life scenario of riding a motorcycle. In the process, you will learn what the appropriate response to a potentially dangerous or risky situation on the road should be. By gaining practice on a smaller scale with an experienced supervisor beside you, you will learn how to best approach motorcycle riding and be safe about it.
