Power Take-Offs – also known as “PTO shafts” – are used to transfer mechanical power between farm tractors and other machinery. While the technology has been widely used since the 1930s, it remains one of the most significant safety hazards faced by farmers and agricultural workers.
Here are some safety tips for using Power Take-Offs courtesy of the National Farmers Union (NFU):
- Power Take-Offs are among the most dangerous types of machinery on farms, and it is essential that all farmworkers thoroughly understand the necessary safety procedures to prevent accidents from occurring.
- Even if the PTO’s rotating component is shielded, it is still very dangerous to reach or step across it, as this can result in serious injuries and even death.
- Avoid wearing any loose clothing or accessories that could get caught in the rotating component.
- Before leaving the seat, always disengage the machinery, turn off the power, and remove the keys.
