Statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) released in early February indicate fatal car accidents in 2013 are outpacing last year’s numbers; so far, there has been more than two fatal car crashes every day since January first. The IDOT statistics show that as of February 11 (forty-two days into 2013), there were 75 fatal car crashes, causing 92 deaths. In the same time period last year, there were 81 motor vehicle fatalities in Illinois.

The IDOT website reports that seat belts were not used, or were used improperly, in 25 of the fatal crashes. Statistics from previous years are no less sobering; 2011’s record, the latest available, lists 281,788 motor vehicle crashes on Illinois roadways. 918 people died in 835 fatal car crashes that year, and 84,172 more were injured. 2011’s fatality rate was a little lower than 2010’s, which saw 927 people die in 858 motor vehicle wrecks—all told, 88,937 people were injured in 2010 in motor vehicle accidents.

The best way to prevent car accidents is to drive alert and defensively. Unless it’s an emergency situation, don’t use your cell phone, or any other electronic device while driving—many studies have linked distracted driving to car crashes. Drive slowly through work zones and crowded city streets, especially around intersections. Always wear a seat belt, and if you have young children, make sure their car seats are properly secured. These things sound like common sense, but failing to do them can lead to horrible accidents, or cause a fender bender to turn into something much worse.
