Road rash, also known as road burn, can be the result of motorcycle accidents after the motorcyclist has been thrown off of their motorcycle and dragged along the pavement. This results in a severe type of scrape where multiple layers of skin are scratched off from the surface. There are various types of road rash, but all can be painful and most should require medical attention as soon as possible.

First-degree road rash is the most minor type and is commonly an abrasion to the skin. This type of road rash can be treated at home with the proper dressing and antiseptics. Second-degree road rashes will bleed and expose more than simply the skin. This is more severe and should require medical attention. Third-degree road rashes are very severe, will bleed, may appear shiny, and are typically deep wounds that are very sensitive to touch. It exposes more of your nerves, muscles, tendons, or bones. This type of road rash should certainly require medical attention immediately.

It is important to keep in mind that any road rash will expose your body deeper than just the first layer of skin, therefore it is more susceptible to an infection which can lead to more complications. Because of this, one should avoid touching it and make sure that it is disinfected and treated accordingly to avoid any possible infections. If it is medically treated, there are some significant medical expenses that can build up, and you should not have to handle it on your own when someone else’s negligence caused your injuries.
