Smoked Salmon Recalls On The Rise

Recalls of smoked salmon rose in the last two months of 2012, and this trend appears to be continuing. Whole Foods has just announced a recall of sockeye salmon, which tested positive for Listeria Monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes food poisoning. One lot code of 4-ounce Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, which was sold in 12 states, was recalled on January 26 by the Austin-based Whole Foods Market Corp. The recalled salmon was cold smoked, and sold sliced and packaged; no illnesses have been reported yet.

Whole Market stores in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Utah all sold the recalled salmon. The fish was sold in black-and-gold, flat, rectangular vacuum-sealed packages; the lot code being recalled is 7425A2298B (this number is printed on the back), and the UPC code is 0 99482 40880 0.

Whole Foods Market stores are posting signs notifying customers of this recall. Listeria, the bacteria that was found in the fish, can cause potentially lethal infections; symptoms of listeria include high fever, severe headaches, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
