Statistics Show U.S. Drivers The Worst

In the United States, cars are still the main way we get around. A few recent studies have investigated which US drivers are the worst of all—based on concrete statistics, not just popular opinion.

In terms of comprehending the rules of the road, Americans as a whole don’t come out looking so good; in 2011, GMAC Insurance conducted a study around basic questions found on any state’s written driving test, and found that 41 million people (about 20% of US drivers) wouldn’t pass the test. Worst of all were the District of Columbia drivers, who ranked 51st out of all 50 states and one district. As if the beltway wasn’t bad enough, only 71% of DC drivers are capable of passing a written driving test.

Another study, published in US News and World Report, examined teenage drivers, taking eleven variables into account (fatalities, quantity of teen driver’s licenses, road quality, etc). Based on these criteria, South Dakota scored the lowest, 41.72, with 46,500 teen drivers. On the other end of the scale, the state with the most fatalities among elderly drivers is Florida, where one out of four drivers will be over 65 by 2030. California has a higher number of elderly drivers, but a lower fatality rate. Texas has the highest ratio of elderly traffic deaths per capita in the US.

While New York and California were both notably high in cell phone related car accidents, Tennessee was the worst. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Safety Council have been tracking distracted driving accidents for several years, and the NSC found 10.6% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents in Tennessee involved cell phone use; this is ten times the national average.

One other state had an alarming statistic; Montana is where you’re most likely to die in a car accident, according to 2012 US Census data. Montana residents suffer two fatalities annually, per hundred million miles driven. The next highest state is New York, with .9 fatalities; Massachusetts has .6 per hundred million miles.
