Nursing homes can suffer from a lack of adequate staff and supervision; in a disturbing case from Springfield, Ohio, a visitor to a nursing home was able to molest a resident.

In August of 2012, a 21-year-old resident at the Heartland of Springfield rehabilitation center told staff that a man had entered her room and molested her. The woman’s roommate confirmed seeing a man enter the room; however, he drew the curtain around the bed, so she couldn’t see what he was doing. 42-year-old Larry Thompson was questioned by police on the day of the alleged assault; he claimed that while visiting family at the home, he heard the disabled woman cry out and went to check on her. After a DNA sample collected from Thompson matched one taken from a forensic examination of the victim, Thompson was arrested and charged with gross sexual imposition, a fourth degree felony. The victim was moved to a more supervised area of the nursing home, which contends it did nothing wrong.

Abuse and neglect are a growing problem in nursing homes; the National Center on Elder Abuse reports there were 5.9 million cases of abuse in nursing homes and other care facilities in 2010. 58% of these cases involved neglect. More than 30% of nursing homes in the country experience some form of resident abuse.
