Losing a loved one in an accident is devastating, especially when that loved one was killed performing their job and trying to provide for their family. Each year, thousands of construction workers are injured and nearly 1,000 are killed while working. These construction worker deaths account for nearly 20% of all worker fatalities yearly, with the most common accident that kills construction workers being death due to falls.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), has deemed falls the number one cause of death for construction workers to be falls, followed by accidents where a worker is struck by an object, caught in/between accidents, and electrocution. These four types of accidents are so common that OSHA has dubbed them “The Fatal Four”.

“The Fatal Four”

Falls

Falling is the most common accident that kills the most construction workers at approximately 37.8%. Workers are most often killed falling from ladders, scaffolding, through floors, off of roofs, and from unsecured holes/gaps.

Struck-by an object

Approximately 9.4% of fatal construction accidents involve workers being struck by an object. This can include objects that fall, roll, or swing, hitting the worker.

Caught in/between

Of construction workers that are killed on the job, approximately 7.3% are caught, crushed, compressed, or squeezed between two objects. This often includes heavy machinery, being pulled into moving machinery, and being hit by moving machinery parts.

Electrocution

Electrocution accidents typically occur to electricians on the construction site but can occur whenever there is electricity present and workers are unprotected. Approximately 8.3% of all construction deaths are due to electrocution.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
