When ligaments that support the ankle tear, it is referred to as an ankle sprain. They may have caused a popping sound at the time of the accident in your ankle, which was the sound of the ligament tear. Most cases of ankle sprains can be treated at home with ample rest and icing the injury. You should see a doctor in the event that you feel lots of pain and are having trouble putting weight on the ankle.

The most common symptoms of an ankle sprain include swelling, bruising, tenderness, sensitivity, difficulty walking, and more. It may feel similar to a minor fracture. A minor sprain would be a small tear in the ligament, whereas a severe and painful sprain would be a complete rupture of the ligament. The more that the ankle swells, the more damage there is inside – the ligament causes bleeding which swells the ankle.
