This seems like an easy question to answer however the actual answer is a little more complicated. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), defines a farm as “any place from which $1,000 or more agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the year” with very large farms defined as having gross sales of more than $500,000. This definition does not take into account that nearly 95% of all U.S. farms are family-owned and that many farms are part-time or hobby farms that do not raise food commercially.
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA-NASS) states that Illinois has approximately 72,000 farms, with Illinois farmland covering 27 million acres—about 75% of the state’s total land area. The average size of an Illinois farm, including hobby farms, is 375 acres with the majority of these farms producing soybeans and corn. Approximately 22% of farms have beef cattle, 1% have dairy cattle, and some farms produce specialty products such as alfalfa, canola, nursery products, emu, and fish, as well as allowing recreational activities such as hunting and fishing.
