An OSHA incident rate is a measure of how often a recordable injury or illness occurs every year on a job site and is an important tool for evaluating a company’s safety program. OSHA will investigate companies that have high incidence rates, taking into account the nature of the work and the specific industry. Companies are compared only to those in the same industry, but the general aim is to keep incident rates as low as possible.
Recordable injuries and illnesses are defined by OSHA as, “work-related incidents that result in death, loss of consciousness, days away from work, restricted work, medical treatment beyond first aid, or transfer to another job.” The average OSHA incident rate varies, and some industries are prone to more recordable illnesses and injuries than others, one of which is construction. While a good incident rate is relative to the industry and type of work done, the average OSHA incident rate is 2.9 cases per 100 full-time employees in the private industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the incident rate for construction is 3.0, behind other dangerous industries such as agriculture/hunting/forestry/fishing with an incident rate of 5.3, transportation and warehousing with an incident rate of 4.5, and manufacturing with an incident rate of 3.4.
If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, the lawyers at Mike Agruss Law can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
