There are a few common causes for motorcycles being involved in accidents. After all, motorcyclists are more likely to get into an accident on the road than vehicle drivers are.

Head-On Collisions

A whopping 78% of motorcyclist deaths from accidents come from a vehicle hitting the motorcycle from the front in a head-on collision. This is certainly the most fatal accident for motorcyclists.

Left-Hand Turn Collisions

In left-hand turning collisions, the size of the motorcycle in comparison to vehicles works to the motorcyclists disadvantage. The motorcyclist may be weaving around a lane or attempting to overtake another car while turning left at an intersection. Drivers can be caught off guard by this maneuver and typically risk hitting them from the side or behind. If a motorcyclist is not following the flow of traffic, they put themselves in a much more dangerous situation and are more likely to be the at-fault driver in the accident. It is important that motorcyclists are cautious and do not attempt to speed through traffic by breaking normal traffic rules and natural flow.

Other Reasons

Besides these two more common causes of motorcycle accidents, there are several other more minor causes. Motorcyclists are commonly sideswiped in heavy traffic. Since they are much smaller than vehicles, some motorcyclists try to move ahead of traffic by riding in between lanes of traffic. As vehicles attempt to change lanes and do not see or expect a motorcycle to be moving past them, they may accidentally side-swipe them as they switch, causing a very damaging and forceful impact on the motorcyclist.

Speeding and alcohol go hand in hand in the role they play in motorcycle accidents. Though this is a common cause for vehicle accidents, the damage is more severe for motorcycles since they have less protection and are more lightweight. Thus, speeding and alcohol account for many motorcyclist accident deaths, specifically.

Motorcycles are also in more danger of collisions with fixed objects for the same reason. The simple attributes of motorcycles, such as the lack of protection, make these very dangerous collisions, as well.
