Motorcyclists are in considerable danger when operating their motorcycle, particularly more dangerous than an automobile driver has. The reason is that motorcyclists do not have the heavy steel protection that automobiles have, and they are operating a much less stable, smaller, and a lighter machine. With this in mind, they are at a greater risk to be involved in an accident, experience injuries from that accident, possibly to the point of being fatal. Here are some statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to display those risks:

  • According to the In 2013, 4,668 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes. 94 percent of those motorcyclists were riders and 6 percent were passengers.
  • Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclist fatalities occurred 26 times more frequently than passenger car occupant fatalities in traffic crashes.
  • NHTSA estimates that helmets saved 1,630 motorcyclists’ lives in 2013 and that 715 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.
  • In 2013, motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities, 4 percent of all people injured, 18 percent of all occupants (driver and passenger) fatalities, and 4 percent of all occupants injured.
  • Per registered vehicle, the fatality rate for motorcyclists in 2013 was 6 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants.
  • Per vehicle mile traveled in 2013, motorcyclist fatalities occurred 26 times more frequently than passenger car occupant fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and motorcyclists were nearly 5 times more likely to be injured.
  • In 2013, data shows that the most harmful event for 51 percent of the motorcycles involved in fatal crashes was a collision with a motor vehicle in transport.

Motorcycle riders and passengers more easily get into serious accidents in comparison to automobile drivers and passengers. It is imperative to know the safety requirements and risks that come along with operating a motorcycle. One basic but essential rule to abide by as a motorcycle rider is to always wear a helmet. This can save lives and prevent many life-altering head, neck, and brain injuries.
