Types of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries can occur in many different ways and doctors typically categorize these injuries into two types-traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and acquired brain injuries (ABI).

Traumatic brain injuries occur when the head is jolted, knocked, or suffers penetrative harm to the brain, causing damage when the brain strikes against the skull. In children this is usually seen in car accidents, sporting injuries, birth injuries, and falls and bumps.

Acquired brain injuries are injuries to the brain that occur post-birth. They are not congenital or inherited, but instead occur due to the brain being starved of oxygen, such as near drowning, infections, strokes, and tumors.

Symptoms of Brain Injuries

Diagnosing the seriousness of a brain injury can be difficult due to the complexity and wide range of symptoms a child may suffer and proper diagnosis may take multiple tests performed by a variety of experts.

The typical symptoms of a brain injury can include:

  • Speech impairments
  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Memory loss
  • Restlessness
  • Limited attention span
  • Personality changes
  • Poor coordination
  • Fatigue
  • Emotional changes
  • Vision and speech changes
  • Difficulty meeting developmental milestones

Unlike brain injuries in adults, symptoms and difficulties may take longer to present in children who have been injured and may not appear until years later. This can make it difficult to determine exactly how much care your child may need in the future, including medical, educational, and occupational therapy. Insurance companies know this, but rarely do they offer enough compensation to cover the full extent of your child’s injuries.

If your child has suffered a brain injury, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review their case and work to get them the full compensation they deserve for their current and future needs.
