Help Julie pay her medical debt

My name is Mike Agruss and I’m a lawyer (please don’t stop reading).  Part of my practice helps consumers harassed by debt collectors.  I have never done a Go Fund Me page for a consumer before, but I feel compelled to do so for Julie Davis.  Ms. Davis is married with four children.  She lives in Greenup, Kentucky. Ms. Davis lives in a mobile home with her husband and four children.  Their children are 6, 8, 10, and 12 years old.

In March of 2016, while living in Wyoming, Ms. Davis had emergency gallbladder surgery at Wyoming Medical Center.  Unfortunately, Ms. Davis did not have health insurance at the time because she and her husband had just started a business helping people with diabetes who could not afford their testing supplies.  Ms. Davis worried this emergency surgery would bankrupt her family.  She raised her concerns with Wyoming Medical Center.  The hospital put Ms. Davis in contact with its Charity Care Program.  Charity Care graciously waived $20,386.50 in charges.  Ms.  Davis believed the entire cost of the emergency surgery was waived.

Not long after the surgery, Ms. Davis and her family moved to Kentucky to be closer to family and to live somewhere more affordable.  In the fall of 2016, Ms. Davis received a letter from Rocky Mountain Recovery Systems  (a collection agency) for $8,000.00+ in debt that was supposedly owed to Wyoming Surgical Associates and the anesthesiologist.  Ms. Davis sent the Charity Care Determination Letter to Wyoming Surgery Associates to confirm she did not owe any money.  On several occasions, Ms. Davis was given the runaround.  No one ever gave her a straight answer on whether or not she owed the debt, or if the debt was paid by the Charity Care Program.  Then, on November 20, 2020, a sheriff served Ms. Davis with a complaint and summons.  Rocky Mountain Recovery Systems filed a lawsuit against Ms. Davis, and her husband, claiming they owed over $10,000.00 due to interest and fees.

Ms. Davis has attempted to settle this debt in good faith with Rocky Mounty Recovery Systems.  If Ms. Davis pays the entire amount, this will wipe out her family’s entire savings.  Although it will be financially stressful, Ms. Davis can pay about half of this debt, which is now about $11,000.00.  She needs help paying the other half, or about $5,500.00.

From Ms. Davis: “I am writing to you today in hopes that you can assist me with this bill in some way.  My husband and I both worked for ourselves and unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic has hit us very hard.  We’ve had to try to make ends meet by taking on other opportunities and it doesn’t look like our business will rebound from the impact.  Our primary goal is to keep a roof over our children’s heads and food in their bellies, as I am sure many families are facing right now.  Any assistance you can provide would be truly appreciated.”

Ms. Davis is trying to settle this debt before judgment is entered on May 5, 2021.  Once judgment is entered, this will go on her credit report, her wages may be garnished, and or a lien put on her mobile home.  Please help Ms. Davis raise $5,500.00 to pay this medical debt.
