Dealing with debt is never easy, and being harassed by relentless debt-collectors only adds more stress and exacerbates the situation. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that about 30 million Americans have accounts in collection, and everyone should be aware of a few particularly shady tactics used by these collection agencies which are actually forbidden by law.The FTC has targeted multiple agencies for such practices in recent years, as well as alleged violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Illegal tactics range from falsely impersonating representatives of credit-reporting companies to misrepresenting amounts owed and contacting debtors with postcards. Here are some of the most common illegal tactics used by debt-collectors:
- Masquerading/impersonation – Collectors cannot legally impersonate government agents or law enforcement officials of any kind to attempt to trick debtors into making payments.
- Lying – Some collectors try to force payments by threatening arrest or legal action if they are not sent immediately; these are, of course, lies, and such action (or threat of it) is simply not communicated to debtors in such a way.
- Threatening – Any threats of inaccurate consequences, especially violence and lawsuits which are not actually being filed, are illegal.
- Speaking to friends/loved ones – Collectors cannot legally discuss your debts with your friends, family members, co-workers, etc. to attempt to force payments indirectly.
- Calling at odd hours – Any debt-related calls from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. (local time) are considered harassment.
- Use of profanity – Debtors must be treated with “dignity and professionalism,” and the law generally forbids collectors from using obscenities and foul language.
- Use of fraudulent government documents – Some collectors have used paperwork which attempts to represent official, government-sanctioned documentation to make debtors believe that arrest or prosecution is imminent, and this is highly illegal.

i get up to ten calls a day, ive told them to stop harressing me but they keep calling and calling, i block one number they call from another its non stop for a couple years.
I am called numerous times a day by several different #'s, some of which are on your list. I have spoke to everyone at least once and told them I am doing my best to get caught up, I have just had a really bad run of luck lately.
We have been receiving three calls per day, even on the weekends for the last two weeks. No messages have been left at all.

This is a business and this number keeps calling, nobody is on the other line. This has been happening for weeks, multiple times a day. Every time they call I have to stop what I'm doing to answer the phone, just to find out nobody is there. I don't know why they would be calling a business, nor do I know why nobody is on the other end.
I am curious on your opinion about something and whether I have a case or not. I submitted a comment/question online to credit.com credit experts explaining what had happened and they suggested that I file a complaint and contact a consumer law attorney. I have googled debtors rights and your site has been in the top ten of the results that came up-I have looked at your site and read the testimonials, and thought, why not, let's see what they think! On 09/15/2015, a man named Jake Duggan from CDR (name of company he gave me) called me at work-I spoke to him personally and told him that I was having this looked into because I had some questions regarding this debt and that when I found out something either myself or the company helping me would get back in touch with him. He was polite and we got off the phone. The very next day on 09/16/2015, this same man, Jake Duggan, called my office again and asked for my boss. He wasn't in at the time and my coworker wr ote down a message for him to "call Jake Duggan with CDR & Assoc. regarding employment wage verification for Beth (me), 888-236-7147 claim #249274". Luckily my boss asked me about it before he returned the call because he thought maybe I had applied for a loan and that was what the call was about. I told him no I had not and then he returned the call-the guy asked him what my salary was. My boss told him that he wasn't giving out any information regarding me without either my consent or a court order and the guy told my boss that it would do no good to put me on the phone. My boss then told me that he knew it was a debt collector and that I needed to know my rights because they could not do this-that all they could have asked him would have been location information on me. Did they break a law by doing this? Also-on 10/07/2015 a man saying he was a manager at CDR called me again at work-first off, he only told me the call was being recorded, he did not give me the whole "this is an attempt to collect a debt" speech-don't they have to do that every single time they call you? Did he not break a law there? I told him that I had been doing some research into my rights and that I had found out that I should have received a validation letter within five days after the initial contact from the debt collector and that I had received nothing from CDR (or anyone else regarding this debt) and was contacted the first time on 09/15/2015. At this point he became very rude with me and told me that he knew the law and I didn't and that the law was they had to send the validation letter prior to the initial contact, and said they had sent one to me. I open every single piece of mail, and keep it all! I went home and looked back through six months of mail and have absolutely nothing from CDR or any other company regarding this debt. But while I was still on the phone with this man-I tried to speak again and he began yelling at me and wouldn't let me speak-every time I tried to talk he would yell louder-and then he made a crude comment about "people like me and the type of person I am", unfortunately I did not hear the whole comment because I was trying to speak and he was rudely yelling at me at the same time, so those are the only words I heard. That was the point at which I told him I was glad the call was being recorded and that I was hanging up now. I know that they cannot treat people that way. Is there anything I can do about this? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and offer your advice.

Please I am worried in college taking care of my mother any help would be awesome.
These people have been calling non stop for months. I asked them for a written statement and they said they mailed it out. I double checked the address and gave them the correct one. 4 months late I still have yet to receive anything in writing. They started to call my work phone threatening freezing bank accounts, and wage garnishment. I am at a recorded line at work and told them that and they got very upset, said I had no right to record and hung up. (They have yet to call that number since) today they called a relative and told them that i had a past due debt and my accounts would be frozen at 12am tonight if I did not call them back. Do I have any available remedies? I asked for a payment plan and was denied stating I had to pay the balance in full or risk going to jail.
Ohio Acceptance LLC has called my place of employment several times after I have asked them not to. The have called my phone 6 to 7 times a day. They are calling my parents and my friends after I have explain to them the only number they should call me at. Today Aldo even said they will come to my job and talk to me. This is getting out of hand.
My Son Kyle was involved in a automobile accident and passed away from his injuries on Dec, 3- 2015, This is the third time these people have called and left messages wanting to speak to the executor of his estate. One there is no estate most of his income went for child support and insurance for his daughter. I know his School Loan and Truck Loan were paid off. His truck is now registered to me. They wont say who or what amount is owed. I do not think family's are required to pay off the deceased debt. Am I correct.
Good day, I am requesting your assistance in the litigation of a debt owed to me. I need a lawyer that will help me enforce the agreement we had, and force him to pay back what he owes me. Please get back to me if this is your area of practice. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks,

Hello. I came across your website while searching for information about the "Arnold Harris Law Office", which has been harassing me for quite awhile. They claim that I owe money to the State of Illinois Department of Revenue, but I am unaware of this debt. This is regarding a tax matter from 2011, and I do not recall ever having received a letter from the state about this. I have moved twice since then, so if they ever did send something, maybe it didn't go to the right address. Anyway, I have not spoken with anyone from the debt collection agency, but they have called and sent letters. I have thrown out a couple of the letters, but I know that I have at least one from within the past few months. The thing that troubles me the most is that starting last week, they have tried calling me from a new number (312-604-7173) and yesterday a "Miss Richards representing the State of Illinois" left me a voicemail message. I wasn't exactly sure who was calling me (that number called me once on Friday and the voicemail message was just complete silence), but I did an Internet search for the number and it came up as Arnold Harris. To be honest, if I truly do owe a tax debt to the State, then I would like to pay it. However, I do not appreciate these goons calling me. I am not exactly sure when this has started, but it has been going on for quite awhile and the letters sound very threatening. In the past, they have even called my parent's home. I am sick of getting these calls on my cell phone regularly, as I use the phone primarily for business purposes and get a lot of calls from unknown numbers, so I am afraid to pick up in those cases. >From this latest number, I have a total of 3 calls and 3 messages in a four day span. (2 messages are blank and the other is from Miss Richards) Because of how frequently I receive calls from unknown numbers, I am not sure how many times they have called (and I may have deleted some past voicemails, though there may be some still on my phone), but there may be a few more instances saved on my phone and I'm guessing there is probably a way to recover my past call logs from my iPhone. Unfortunately I cannot tell you more about the letter I received at the moment (I've been temporarily displaced from my apartment due to severe water damage), but I will try to retrieve it if necessary. Please let me if there is something your firm may be able to help me with. As I said, I am willing to pay the state if I truly owe them money, but I am not willing to hand over the $1600 or so that this firm is demanding, especially because they have provided next to no information as to what this is regarding. Thank you for your time!
I am receiving repeated calls at work from a collection agency, even though I have asked them not to call, this includes speaking to my supervisor. I am calm, I am not upset, but talking to my supervisor is very embarrassing, and, I am well aware that once I tell them not to call at work, according to the Fair Debt Collections Act, they are not allowed to call. They are using rather strong legalistic language, words like complaint, garnishment, etc. I have engaged a consumer credit company to negotiate a settlement with them, apparently they refuse to speak with them!
