Spinal Disc Protrusions and Extrusions

A disc herniation occurs when there is a rupture in the soft cushion between spinal bones and part of the disc herniates (pushes outward) against spinal nerves or the spinal cord itself, causing pressure. These injuries occur frequently in car accidents, slip-and-falls, and other perilous situations, and symptoms often vary by individual, though [chronic] pain is the most common.

Unfortunately, injuries to spinal discs are often permanent, though there is a range of treatments available to mitigate symptoms. If you’ve suffered such an injury in an accident, it is best to seek both medical treatment and legal representation as soon as possible to ensure you are taken care of in every possible way.

There are two common types of disc injuries:

Disc Protrusion (a.k.a. “disc bulge”) – These are among the most common causes of back pain and occur when a disc and associated ligaments, despite remaining intact themselves, form an “out-pouching” which presses against the nerves; this can also be described as a bulging against the annulus (fibrous cushion).

Disc Extrusion – This is a rupture in the outer part of a disc which causes its inner gelatinous material (nucleus) to leak; this may occur with either damaged or intact ligaments.

Pain from a disc protrusion may disguise itself by seeming to originate from the feet or thighs or producing tingling, numbness, or general weakness. Protrusions may also cause paresthesia: a numb, “pricking” feeling caused by the protruding disc’s pressing on the nerves; and sciatica: sharp, shooting pain (and numbness in more serious cases) from the lower back or buttocks down to the thigh or calf, generally on only one side of the body.

It’s important to remember that both extrusions and protrusions may occur with or without symptoms. If you or a loved one is suffering from back pain following an accident, it is imperative to seek medical attention as soon as possible to identify its source.
