Pressure sores, also known as bedsores and pressure ulcers, are areas on the skin that begin to break down when something continuously rubs or presses against the skin, reducing blood flow to the area. Pressure sores most often form over bony areas of the body, such as on the hips, heels, tailbone, shoulder blades, knees, and the back of the head.
Pressure sores are common in assisted living facilities where people are paralyzed, using wheelchairs, or confined to their bed for extended periods of time. Chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart conditions make the healing of pressure sores difficult and some sores will never heal.
Four Stages of Pressure Sores
Pressure sores fall into four categories depending on their depth and severity. These four stages of pressure sores are:
- Stage 1-Stage 1 of pressure sores is the mildest stage and an indication that a sore is forming. There will be a red, painful area on the skin that does not turn white when pressed. The skin may be warm or cool, soft or firm.
- Stage 2-The skin begins to blister, and an open sore will be formed. The skin surrounding that area will be irritated and red.
- Stage 3-The sore will become a sunken crater. The tissue below the sore will be damaged and you may see body fat within the center of the crater.
- Stage 4-Stage 4 is the most serious type of pressure sore. The skin and tissue in the area of the sore is severely damaged, with the ability to see muscle, bone, tendons, or joints and infection is possible.
An infected pressure sore will take much longer to heal, and the infection can spread to the rest of the body. Signs of infection in the pressure sore include:
- Thick pus that is yellow or green
- Bad smell coming from the sore
- Skin warm to the touch
- Swelling and tenderness
If an infection has spread, the signs can include:
- Chills and fever
- Rapid heartbeat
- Weakness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Confusion
