Pressure sores, also known as bed sores and pressure ulcers, develop when a large amount of pressure is applied to an area of the skin over a short period of time or a lesser amount of pressure is applied to that area over a longer period of time.
When this pressure continues, blood flow to that area is disrupted. Without the proper amount of blood flow necessary, the skin will then become starved of oxygen and nutrients and begins to break down, forming a pressure sore. Commonly, this occurs on bony areas of the body that are not covered by layers of fat, such as the hips, knees, elbows, tailbone, heels, and ears and can affect people who are paralyzed, bedridden, wheelchair bound or have preexisting conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
Unfortunately, pressure sores are an example of neglect and are common in nursing homes and assisted living facilities where patients are not receiving the basic care they deserve.
