Bicycle Helmets

Cycling, while always a popular recreational activity, has exploded in recent years for those looking to get in shape, live a little “greener”, and use an alternative method for their daily transportation. Unfortunately, cycling also comes with risks. Cyclists are at a distinct disadvantage when they take to Illinois’ roadways because of their lack of protection, with a bicycle helmet being their only line of defense in a bicycle accident.

There are no statewide laws requiring helmets to be used by either adults or children; Illinois only requires that bicycle couriers and delivery riders wear helmets while under the scope of their employment. While some municipalities do have laws in effect for children and bike helmets, the majority of cyclists choose to ride without this important protection which puts them at risk for severe head injuries and death.

Bicycle Helmets and Traumatic Brain Injuries

One of the most severe injuries sustained in an accident, but in bike accidents in particular, are traumatic brain injuries (TBI). TBI’s can range from concussions to skull fractures and can result in long-term complications that can be life-altering, which can include:

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Headaches
  • Memory loss
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Confusion and/or inability to concentrate
  • Loss of coordination
  • Seizures
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Coma
  • Death

While bicycle helmets will not completely stop a TBI, research has shown that a properly fitting bike helmet can reduce the risk of a TBI by approximately half. In addition, a cyclist that is wearing a bike helmet will be less likely to die in a bicycle accident than a cyclist that is not wearing protection.

Choosing a Bicycle Helmet

Bicycle helmets will only do their job if they are the proper size and fit. When choosing a bike helmet, you should follow the following recommendations:

  • The front of the bike helmet should rest just above your eyebrows with a 1-2 finger width between your brow and the helmet;
  • The helmet should not be either too loose or too tight;
  • The ear straps should lay flat against your head and the chin strap should allow one finger between the helmet buckle and your chin.

If the helmet is too large or isn’t buckled, you will not receive the proper protection the helmet is intended to provide. If you have never purchased a bike helmet before or you have questions about finding the proper bike helmet for you or your child, a bike shop is your best bet to ensure that your entire family is safe when they take to Illinois’ roads.

Bicycle Helmets and Children

It is important to start children early with helmets as they are particularly prone to head injuries when it comes to bike accidents. Just like wearing a seatbelt in a car, children should be taught that helmets are not cumbersome, but something they must do every time they ride a bike.

The best way to ensure that your children are safe is to provide them with a positive example and wear a helmet when you ride as well. It is also important to set strict rules about wearing a helmet and make wearing a bike helmet fun by allowing your child to pick out their “special” helmet. All of these things go a long way when it comes to keeping your loved ones safe.

While Illinois law does not require the use of bike helmets if they are your only protection, why would you not use them? Bike helmets are just good, common sense
