The Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest breeds of dogs, predating most modern breeds in the 19th century. Bred for most Arctic jobs, the Alaskan Malamute has traditionally been used in sledding, hunting, and tracking. In the Gold Rush of 1896, prospectors used the Alaskan Malamute to transport gear and in World War II, Malamutes were used for search and rescue.
The Alaskan Malamute is often confused with the Siberian Husky and while both breeds look very similar, the Malamute is a larger dog, standing taller and weighing upwards of 95 pounds compared to the Siberian Husky that will usually max out at 60 pounds. Built more for endurance and strength, the Malamute excels in pulling heavyweight.
Highly trainable and intelligent, the Malamute is not a good breed for a novice dog owner. They have a high prey drive, are high energy, stubborn, and like most working breeds, can get bored easily without a job to keep them mentally stimulated. Without proper training and exercise, the Alaskan Malamute can become prone to aggressive behaviors and biting.
According to a study done over the past 30 years, the Alaskan Malamute had been involved in 17 dog bite attacks, six of which were fatal. But, it is important to remember, any dog can bite, especially an improperly trained dog, one that is unsocialized, abused, neglected, or in pain.
