The Chow is a dog breed that originated in northern China. This “puffy lion-dog” was kept by Chinese royalty, used in sled pulling, and is rumored to be the model behind the teddy bear after Queen Victoria’s advisors, who disapproved of her carrying around her Chow puppy everywhere she went, had a small replica sewn for her.
The Chow is a medium-sized dog weighing between 35-90 pounds and is recognizable by its distinctive purple tongue and lion-like appearance. Now kept as a pet, the Chow is very protective of its owner and property and is often wary of strangers. Chow-Chows tend to be stubborn and resistant to training, so novice dog owners may be in over their heads. Aggression is common with the Chow-Chow, which is why some homeowner’s insurance companies consider them high-risk, often raising insurance rates if one is kept in the home. To protect others, it is highly recommended that the Chow be socialized and trained from an early age.
In a recent study done between 1982-2016, the Chow was documented to be involved in 66 attacks that caused bodily harm, 37 of the victims were children, and 8 attacks resulted in death.
