According to national statistics compiled by Dogsbite.org, between 2005 and 2018, dog bite attacks were the cause of death for 417 Americans. In 2018, 36 of these deaths occurred. Annual data shows that 42%, or 15, of these deaths in 2018 were children aged 6 years old or younger, and victims aged 50 years old and older accounted for 71% of the adults that were killed during a dog attack.
The breeds of dogs that were most involved in dog bite attacks in 2018 included Pit Bulls (26), mixed breeds (3), Rottweilers, Bullmastiff/Mastiffs, and Dogo de Argentino’s at 2 fatalities each. Of the mixed breed dogs, the identified breeds include Beagles, Chihuahuas, German Shepherds, and Wolf-Hybrids, making it important to remember that any breed of dog can bite.
Family dogs are often the offending dogs involved in dog bite attacks, with family pets being responsible for 72% of fatalities in 2018. 28% of these attacks were the dog killing its owner, 25% involved a victim new to the household, and 28% involved a grandparent or babysitter in the home.
