Motorcyclists are more likely to find themselves in an accident and those accidents are more likely to result in more severe injuries than cars are. Motorcycles are particularly dangerous for a few reasons. First, they do not have the surrounding protection that cars do. Cars have strong steel protecting the passengers as their first defense in a collision. Motorcycles have no outer protection between the rider and the external world, which makes them more vulnerable to injury. Motorcyclists must rely on their own attire, gear, padding, and helmet to protect them. In some cases of serious motorcycle accidents, even this may not be enough to completely protect them.
The smaller size of motorcycles also makes them less stable and safe among the larger entities on the road. Any collision with a car or a truck would cause severe injuries and damage to the motorcyclist and his motorcycle. Their size also may make them more difficult to spot on the road to cars, for example when a car would be switching lanes and unaware of the oncoming motorcycle. Poor riding and/or weather conditions can also work even more to a motorcyclist’s detriment, due to the lesser stability that its size lends.
