Bicycling Fatalities

Riding bicycles in Chicago, whether for work, play, or “greener” living, has taken off in recent years. With the increase of bicycles on the road comes an increase in accidents. Bicycle accidents are often quite serious as cyclists are at a distinct disadvantage with their lack of protection, and they are no match for vehicles traveling at any speed.

Since records have been kept regarding bicycling fatalities, the average number of fatal cycling accidents has been between 600-800, with an average of 800 per year between 2006-2016 according to the League of American Bicyclists. The year 2016 saw one of the highest rates of cycling deaths with 840 and fatalities have increased an average of 2% over the past five years.

Even with biking laws and new bike lanes installed in many cities to protect cyclists, accidents still occur. The League of American Bicyclists believes the increase is due to a number of factors, including:

  • Increased number of cars on the roadways;
  • Decrease in gas prices;
  • Distracted driving;
  • Disregard or unfamiliarity of cycling laws;
  • Drunk driving.

Chicago installed over 100 miles of marked bike lanes on its streets, many of which were not properly designed and implemented. This poor planning combined with drivers who do not respect cyclists or understand the laws puts cyclists at risk for serious injuries such as broken bones, lacerations, back and neck trauma, joint injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and even death.

If you or a loved one has suffered a cycling injury or a wrongful death, it is important to discuss your case with an experienced personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. The state of Illinois limits claims for bodily injuries to two years after the date of the accident, and for property damage, you have five years from the date of the accident to file a lawsuit or accept an insurance settlement.

At America’s Consumer Lawyer, we represent clients in Illinois who have suffered personal injuries from a bicycle accident, as well as family members who have lost a loved one in a road accident caused by the negligent or reckless conduct of another person. We know that when a bicycle collides with a vehicle weighing at least 2,000 pounds, the odds are not in the cyclist’s favor and the results can be tragic.

It’s important to consult with an experienced Chicago bicycle accident attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights and determine if you have a valid personal injury claim or wrongful death claim against a reckless or negligent driver. If you were injured in a bicycle accident, contact America’s Consumer Lawyer, for a free consultation.
