Occupational contact dermatitis is a skin condition caused by work-related exposure. OCD is a rash that develops as a result of exposure to specific physical exposures and irritating or allergic objects which are referred to as triggering agents. When skin is constantly exposed to these triggering agents the natural protective barrier of the skin is damaged—causing either contact irritant or allergic dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is typically confined to the area where the irritant touched the skin and will develop almost immediately. Allergic contact dermatitis is more widespread on the body and will take longer to develop, often the next day or so.
Triggering agents for dermatitis on the farm may include:
- Dust
- Plants
- Disinfectants
- Foods
- Pesticides and fertilizers
- Solvents and cleaners
- Wear gloves and personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for the job being completed.
- Eliminate or prevent exposure to triggering agents as much is possible.
- Avoid soap and bubbly products as they are drying to the skin.
- Use water-based moisturizers after washing hands and oil-based moisturizers for extremely dry skin.
- Cover cracked skin and open sores.
