What are the different types of farming methods?

Agriculture is a major industry in the United States, with over 2.2 million farms covering over 922 million acres. This number pales in comparison to the number of farms around the world which is over 570 million. Various factors determine the type of farming a farmer could adopt, including available labor, product demand, soil conditions, and climate.
The most commonly seen types of farming methods seen around the world include:

  • Arable farming – Arable farming involves growing crops in only warm climates and is practiced on gentle slopes or flat land with deep, fertile soil. The land should not be too wet or too dry, should be fairly sheltered, and suitable for the use of machinery.
  • Pastoral farming – Pastoral farming is the rearing of animals on land that is not suitable for crops, such as land that has steep slopes, does not encourage the use of machinery, or will not provide the nutrients for crops.
  • Mixed farming – Mixed farming involves raising crops and animals on the same land.
  • Subsistence farming – Subsistence farming is the raising of crops and/or animals for personal use. It is done on a small-scale and is enough to feed the farmer’s family. Subsistence farmers are focused on being self-sufficient.
  • Commercial farming – Commercial farming is practiced to make a profit, and often involves the growing of one type of crop or animal (monoculture).
  • Extensive and intensive farming – Extensive farming involves land tillage with the aim to increase output. Intensive farming involves increasing capital and labor on the piece of land being cultivated to increase yield.
  • Nomadic farming – Nomadic farming involves the farmer moving with their animals from one pasture to another in the search for food and water. Often practiced in arid or semi-arid regions, nomadic farming is a type of subsistence farming.
  • Sedentary farming – Sedentary farming involves tilling the same piece of land for many years; the land used for many years for growing crops or rearing animals.
  • Poultry farming – Poultry farming involves the raising of turkeys and/or chickens for meat and/or eggs either on large- or small-scale farms.
  • Fish farming – Fish farming is also known as aquaculture and is the practice of raising fish in large numbers in large tanks or ponds.
