Poultry Farm

Poultry farms are farms where domesticated birds such as chicken, turkeys, geese, and ducks are raised to produce meat and/or eggs for food. With more than 60 billion chickens killed annually for consumption, chickens are farmed in the greatest numbers. Chickens that are raised for eggs are known as layers and meat chickens are called broilers. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration is the national organization which oversees poultry production.

Intensive vs. Free Range Farming

According to the World Watch Institute, 68% of eggs and 74% of the world’s poultry meat is produced intensively. Intensive farming, also known as industrial farming or factory farming, produces a higher level of output. Intensive farming has come under criticism in recent years for the treatment of the animals, including beak trimming, antibiotic and growth hormone usage, battery cages, the spread of disease among flocks and to consumers, and inhumane practices during slaughter and disposal.
Because of this, free-range, free-run, yarding, and organic means of raising chickens on a smaller scale have become more popular. While typically more humane for the animals, these methods also come with some risks, including increased dust and ammonia production, aggressive behavior of the roosters, and bacterial contamination.

Worker Health and Safety

Poultry workers experience substantially higher rates of illness and injury than other manufacturing careers on average. Injuries sustained in poultry farming are often due to awkward postures, cold temperatures, and repetitive movements. The most commonly seen injuries include:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Hearing loss
  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Allergic reactions
  • Skin infections
  • Gastrointestinal diseases
Poultry housing has shown to pose the largest risk in poultry farming as workers are exposed to high levels of concentrated airborne particulate matter (PM) and endotoxins due to dust build up and bacteria that builds up over time. With workers spending time close to the floor, dust and debris is forced into the air which is then inhaled during egg collection. Workers are also at-risk when coming into contact with disinfectants, detergents, vaccines, medications, and diseased animals who can potentially spread zoonotic diseases.
Agricultural jobs rank as one of the most dangerous in the U.S. If you or a loved one was injured, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the circumstances of your accident.
