Who Can I Sue in a Sexual Abuse Civil Lawsuit

Sexual abuse victims and survivors inevitably carry the long-term consequences of their abuse. This can be one or a combination of physical, emotional, and psychological issues. While there is no one size fits all solution for the lifelong trauma stemming from the abuse, it’s imperative that victims and survivors get to decide whether to hold their offenders accountable or not.

In a civil lawsuit, the plaintiff can file a case against the perpetrator and institutions, organizations, and authority figures who have neglected their duty to maintain a safe environment. For instance, an employee of a ridesharing app commits sexual misconduct against a customer. The customer may then file a case against the perpetrator and the business.

Filing a case against larger entities isn’t for the sole purpose of claiming higher damages (monetary compensation); it’s also to help bringing these powerful institutions accountable for negligent hiring, supervision, or retention, among others. Filing against them will essentially bring light into the structural violence of organized groups, especially against common people. Some institutions, like the church, have been purposefully overlooking sexual abuse claims and spending fortunes to keep their predatory priests safe from public scrutiny and incarceration.
The thought of fighting superstructures alone can be demoralizing. But, having a reliable and dedicated legal counsel to support your cause is a step closer to justice.
