How Common is Child Sex Abuse?

There is no definitive answer as to the frequency of the incidence of child sexual abuse. This is due to the fact that most cases go unreported and collected data may vary depending on the study and experts. According to the Children Assessment Center, however, researchers suggest that occurrence varies from 1% to 35% while professionals related in the field of abuse suggest 8% to 20% incidence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines sexual abuse as involving individuals younger than 18 years old. CDC’s data showed that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys have experienced sexual abuse in childhood and that the abuse incurred the United States of America $9 billion. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) even reported that the Child Protective Services (CPS) is able to substantiate claims of abuse every 9 minutes.
