A dairy farm is where female livestock are raised for the production of milk. Milk may be processed on the farm or may be sent to a dairy plant for the eventual sale of dairy products. Modern dairy farming began in the 1900s after pasteurization was developed and more widely practiced. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 98% of dairy farms, which provide approximately 900,000 jobs in the U.S., are multi-generational family farms.
Most dairy farms consist of cows, however, in recent years alternative animals have been used for milk production, including sheep, goats, and camels. In 2019, the U.S. produced 217.5 billion pounds of milk for human consumption.
Central to the dairy farm is the milking parlor. Each cow visits the parlor at least twice a day to be milked and efficiency is crucial. Gone are the days of milking cows with a stool and pail, milking is now performed almost exclusively by milking machines, with the most common being the cluster milker.
