A dry farm, also known as dryland farming, encompasses specific agricultural techniques for non-irrigated crop cultivation. Dry farms are associated with drylands which are areas with a cool wet season followed by a warm, dry season that often have arid conditions (drought-prone).
Dry farms in the U.S. are seen in the Great Plains, Eastern Washington, and the states in the Southwest. Successful dry farming can be accomplished with as little as nine (9) inches of water a year and the most commonly seen crops include winter wheat, grapes, tomatoes, pumpkins, sunflowers, beans, corn, and watermelon.
Dry farming methods require farmers to make the best use of soil moisture that was created by winter rainfall. Some dry farming practices include:
- Selection of crops suited for dry farming practices
- Minimal land tilling
- Strict weed control
- Controlled traffic
- Wider than normal crop spacing
