Farm Ownership

A majority of U.S. farms, over 60%, are owner-operated, according to the Census of Agriculture. This report also finds that approximately 39% of the 911 million acres of farms in the contiguous United States is rented, with half of that being cropland and approximately 25% being pastureland. In general, rental activity is focused on grain production such as rice, corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton.
Smaller family farms operators are more likely to be full owners of the land they operate. The majority of rented acres (80%) are owned by non-operator landlords. Retired farmers make up 38% of non-operator landlords and most landlords have long-term relationships with their tenants. In addition, non-operator landlords are more likely to acquire land through inheritance than operator landlords and 10% of all land in farms was transferred between 2015-2019, most of which changed hands through gifts, trusts, or wills. A quarter of this land is sold between nonrelatives, with approximately 14% sold between relatives.
