Cattle farming involves the rearing and management of livestock (cattle), typically for the production of beef. The duties of a cattle farmer include feeding, administering medication, maintaining facilities, monitoring the herd for disease, assisting with calving, performing artificial insemination, and managing waste. Cattle farmers may also be responsible for transporting sale stock, marketing their products, baling hay, harvesting other forage for feed, and maintaining farm equipment.
Cattle farmers may operate as commercial feedlot beef producers or as cow-calf operations. Feedlot producers raise beef cattle to market weight and usually purchase their cattle as weanlings instead of breeding their own stock. Cow-calf farmers raise their own cattle, often selling weanlings to commercial stockyards or feedlots.
The United States is the world’s largest producer of beef, with the majority of cattle farms located in the southern states like Texas, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
As is the case in other livestock farming operations, cattle farming requires long hours in extreme temperatures and in varying weather conditions with potentially dangerous animals. Agricultural jobs rank as one of the most dangerous in the U.S. If you or a loved one was injured, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the circumstances of your accident.
