What are the types of farm structures?

Farm structures, also known as farm buildings, are any building or facility on a farm that is used for farming operations. Each type of structure will serve a different purpose. The various types of farm structures include the following:

  • Farmhouse – The residence for the farmer, their family, and/or farm employees.
  • Barn – A barn can serve as a shelter for livestock or can act as storage for animal feed, farm produce, supplies, and machinery.
  • Chicken coop – Built to house and protect chickens as well as provide them a place to lay their eggs.
  • Brooder house – A brooder house is where poultry is housed, such as turkey.
  • Cowshed – A unit strictly for housing cows, but may also be called a barn.
  • Stable – A structure typically used for keeping horses and their supplies.
  • Silo – A storage structure for grains such as corn, rice, and silage that keeps these items free from rodents, insects, and moisture. There are different types of silos including tower silos, bunker silos, bag silos, concrete stave silos, and fabric silos.
  • Greenhouse – A structure used for cultivating plants and crops that require specialized weather conditions.
  • Milking shed – A farm structure where hygienic practices are used for the milking of dairy animals.
  • Pigpen or sty – Also known as a pig parlor or hog pen, this structure is used for rearing domestic pigs.
  • Slaughterhouse – A farm structure where animals intended for human consumption are killed before moving to the packaging department.
