The Akita is a medium-sized dog originating in northern Japan that made its way to the United States when Helen Keller was gifted two Akita’s from the Japanese government in 1938 and when U.S. servicemen began bringing Akita’s home from WWII. Today’s Akita is a large-boned dog weighing between 70-130 pounds that are known for its strength.
The Akita is a strong-willed breed that is wary of strangers and takes a dominant role with others, making it a dog that is not a good match for novice dog owners. Because of this willfulness and penchant towards aggression and biting, training for the Akita should begin very early in their life; as early as 7-8 weeks old.
While the Akita is not as popular in the United States and Canada as other breeds, between 1982-2013 they were involved in 68 dog bite attacks with 50 maimings and 8 deaths. This is a surprisingly large number considering they are less than 1% of the dog population in the two countries.
