I have attempted to be approved for a Bar Study loan, but have failed after several tries. I was told the first time I applied that I did not have strong enough credit to be approved for the loan by myself, so I should add a co-signer. I next tried with my wife. I was again rejected and told the reasoning was based on credit information from TransUnion. I received an automated letter that I should try again with another co-signer. After waiting a few months, I again tried after convincing my father to co-sign with me. He spent 25 minutes on the phone giving up his personal information and having his credit pulled which makes an inquiry on his credit file which can be viewed as negative. After several days and being told to print out the paper application with my dad’s signature and mail in, we were again alerted that we were not approved, and again sent an automated letter stating such. After allowing another couple of months to pass, and becoming more desperate to get this loan done so I can survive while studying for the bar exam, I decided to call again, and speak to a representative about what had happened, and see if I could speak with an underwriter or someone who can help me further figure out what type of co-signer would help get this accomplised so that I can get the loan done. I was told by that rep that because of the time past, I needed to re-apply, get rejected, they re-apply with a co-signer, and if that was rejected again, I could speak with an underwriter who could help me with a re-consideration. I again applied and was rejected and sent a letter. I then convinced my mom to apply with me. My mom has flawless credit, a high income and low debt to income ratio. I also had spoken with an acquaintence who was nice enough to share their personal information and after viewing the negatives on their credit, and the strength of their co-signer, I felt strongly that I would be finally be approved, but for likely a lessor amount than the $15,000 maximum you are able to ask Sallie Mae for. Our situations were extremely similar except my co-signer was much stronger. After my mom spent 20 minutes on the phone giving her personal information, we were told that a decision would be ready in about 3-5 business days. That night we received a letter that further action was needed. Sallie Mae needed either a ledgible copy of my mom’s driver’s license, or a copy of her current utitily bill. My mom was on the road traveling, so she gave me the log-in and password for her utility company, and I was able to log in, find her current bill, save it and upload a copy to Sallie Mae’s website. I then was sent an email saying that it had been received and would be processed within the next 3-5 business days. However, that night, I received another letter saying the application had been denied, however although this co-signer didn’t work, I could apply with ANOTHER creditworthy co-signer. My mom has a credit score in the 800’s an income of $680,000+, and no real debt besides two smaller mortgages. At this point I began suspecting age discrimination because my father is in his 70’s, my mother in her mid 60’s, but nowhere near retirement and in great physical and mental condition being a doctor herself. This was the only real difference I could find between my situation and the acquaintence who had shared her information on how she got approved with me. So, I called in this time to speak with an underwriter as I was told. Upon getting disconnected and having to call back, I was finally put in touch with an underwriter who informed me that Sallie Mae would not be able to offer me a loan due to MY credit, nothing to do with any co-signers. I asked why I keep receiving letters and keep having representatives tell me to try with a different co-signer, when my credit would not allow me to get the loan approved under any circumstances with any co-signer, and why I know this is not true by looking at someone else who was approved under similar circumstances but with a less strong co-signer. I was told that the letters generated are automated, and they apologize that they keep getting sent out. Now, I have put 4 negative inquires on my credit for applying which I have worked hard to repair, I have had 3 other people add an inquiry to borrow on their credit which is viewed as negative, as well as having each one of them go through 20 minute phone calls in which they divulge all types of personal information in hopes to get this loan done. In fact if I was not eligible at all, why was I asked for a signed application, and why was I asked for a copy of a driver’s license or utility bill? All of this over several months of trying, and then to be told I am not eligible PERIOD, with any co-signer, after receiving numerous letters and having numerous representatives having me try again and again! I asked why someone can’t take 1 minute to call me, or type a letter after the first or second attempt, to inform me that I would not be able to get the loan under any circumstances. This has caused me great stress and embarrasment with close members of my family, as well as dragged on a situation that is dire to me surviving while preparing to take the bar exam which will better myself and quality of life, and increase my probability of being able to easily pay back my loan debts and live comfortably. I am strongly considering starting my law career by filing a lawsuit against Sallie Mae for their lending practices, and the strife and trouble it has caused me and my family.
