Behavioral Hazards and Child Safety

Here are some safety tips related to behavioral hazards, as well as children, courtesy of the National Farmers Union (NFU):
  • Child Safety - To reduce the risks of accidents involving children: ensure that silos and bins are locked at all times; don't allow children into farm buildings alone; ensure that fixed ladders are inaccessible to children and portable ladders are stored out of their reach; ensure that farm ponds and manure pits are properly fenced; abandoned wells should always be capped; and children shouldn't be allowed to ride in or on farm vehicles or play on any idle equipment.
  • Fall Prevention - Workers should always use a “3-point hold” when getting in or out of a vehicle and additional grab rails should be installed in trucks, tractors, and even ramps if necessary.
  • Distraction - Cell phone use, drinking, and unlawful drug use directly result in farm accidents which result in serious injury and even death, and these behaviors should be strongly discouraged among farmworkers at all times.

  • Fatigue - The effects of fatigue cannot be underestimated, as they can include impaired judgment and a reduced ability to identify potential dangers, not to mention the clear dangers of falling asleep on-the-job. Be sure that all farm/agricultural workers are properly rested and have sufficient time in-between shifts to do so.
