The Bullmastiff is a strong, powerful breed originally bred in the 19th century by gatekeepers looking to protect their estates. The Bullmastiff is a product of breeding the English Mastiff and the now-extinct Old English Bulldog for their size, strength, and speed. The popularity of this breed for their protective abilities has made them top guard dogs, even in places such as South Africa as guards for diamond mines.
Bullmastiffs are good family dogs and generally not known to be aggressive or vicious unless their family needs protection. It is important to remember, the Bullmastiff was bred to tackle and pin an intruder, so while they may be docile and content with laying around, if there is a visitor to the home, the Bullmastiff could cause injuries because of a perceived threat.
The Bullmastiff can weigh upwards of 130 pounds, although some can far exceed that size. While they were bred to pin and hold without injury, any dog, including the Bullmastiff, can bite. According to a report on dog bites in the years of 1982-2013, the Bullmastiff has been the breed that caused the most injuries. Of the 105 Bullmastiff attacks in that 31-year time frame, 61 people were injured, 42 victims were children, and 15 of the attacks were fatal. This is quite eye-opening as the Bullmastiff makes up only 0.2% of the dog population in the U.S. and Canada.
