Businesses Prevent

Businesses sometimes face the problem of slip and falls or trip and falls occurring on their property, which can result in a premises liability lawsuit against them based on their negligence in failing to eliminate the hazard. But there are some things that businesses can do to prevent the incidence of this, listed below:

  • If there is a hazard, put up warning signs or a barrier around it. In doing so, any reasonable person will be made aware of the hazard and know to avoid it. This ensures your duty of care owed to them is upheld.
  • Clean any spills or obstructions immediately when they are recognized. Make sure that after the cleanup, the floor is completely back to normal and no residual matter of the hazard is left to pose a risk. It may be worth hiring a team dedicated to this practice, depending on the nature of your business. This protects lawful entrants from suffering from any injury had it been left there.
  • Place bright and sufficient lighting around the area. People can miss hazards simply because it is too dark or dim to see them. Ample lighting where it’s needed will call attention to any potential hazards to a reasonable person.
  • Keep up and maintain the property according to building codes. Building codes are enforced for a reason. They protect the safety of people on the property. Regularly inspect and maintain all aspects of your property to ensure that you are being compliant with your areas building codes, as well as on the state and federal level.
  • Keep walkways free of obstructions. This should take a reasonable employee as little as walking around and moving what should not be in the walkway as it poses a risk to others.
  • Create expectations for your employees’ shoes. Shoes actually can play a large part in slips, trips, and falls since some are caused by greasy or oily shoes. Depending on the nature of the job, a business may consider creating rules regarding shoes that employees must wear to prevent any slickness from developing.
