Farmers and other agricultural workers have higher rates of several types of cancer due to their frequent exposure to pesticides and other chemicals, as well as long hours in the sun, according to the National Cancer Institute. According to researchers, farmers are typically healthier because of their level of activity and lower rates of smoking, however, they are more at-risk for cancers such as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, melanoma, and cancers of the lip, stomach, and prostate.
Researchers believe exposure to pesticides and other agricultural chemicals are the likely cause of these cancers, affecting their immune systems and allowing cancer to develop. Because agricultural workers are often outside in ultraviolet light for extended periods, cancers of the skin may also develop.
Glyphosate
In recent years, the use of Glyphosate, the active ingredient in weedkillers such as Roundup, has come into question. Developed by Monsanto in 1974, Glyphosate was created to kill weeds that impact cash crops like cotton, soy, and corn, which have been genetically altered to resist the effects of the chemical. Unfortunately, humans do not have the same protections and may develop cancers when coming into contact with Glyphosate, specifically Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
The signs and symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma include:
- Fatigue
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swollen abdomen
- Fever and chills
- Shortness of breath
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
