Child-strollers are not necessarily a common target of product-recalls, but injuries can and do happen with these devices and it’s helpful to understand some statistics and important tips to reduce these accidents involving young children.
A recent study in Academic Pediatrics has found that between 1990 and 2010, nearly 361,000 children ages five and younger were treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained in child-strollers, and it’s estimated that the median age of children in these accidents was only eleven months. The prevalence of brain injuries in these accidents also increased from 17% in 1990 to about 53% in 2010.
Here are some tips to reduce the risk of an accident involving a child-stroller:
– “Newer is better.” Generally speaking, newer designs and models of strollers are safer than preceding models, and all strollers and similar carriers manufactured after September 2015 are required to meet stricter mandatory standards.
– Always make sure your child is properly buckled into the stroller to prevent falls of any kind.
– Visit “recalls.gov” to ensure the safety of your stroller and check for any relevant product-recalls.
– Make sure your current stroller is appropriate to your child’s age, height, and weight. Do not use a stroller that no longer fits them properly.
– Carefully read through all instructions for a stroller’s assembly, use, and maintenance.
– Never leave a child in a stroller unattended.
– Always assist your child into the stroller and never let them climb into it themselves.
– Some strollers can tip over when weighted bags are placed on their handles, so try to store bags underneath if the stroller has a wide base.
