Drug Impairment Car Accidents

When most people think of impaired driving, they might think of alcohol. However, driving while under drug impairment is a much more common occurrence than it was ever before. In 2016, the National Drug Use and Health survey found that 11.8 million people drove under the influence of illicit drugs, which included marijuana and prescription drugs. The study also found that male drivers age 18-25 were the leading culprits in drug impairment accidents, but drivers of any age are just as dangerous when they are driving under the influence of both illegal and prescription drugs.

The Governors Highway Safety Administration in 2015 found that 43% of drivers who were in an accident tested positive for drug impairment. The drugs that are most commonly linked to accidents due to drug impairment are marijuana and prescription drugs. Some studies have shown that drivers with THC in their blood were twice as likely to cause an accident, however a study by the NHTSA found that there was no noticeable increase in accidents by drivers under the influence of marijuana. While more research is needed on the specific way marijuana contributes to accidents, what does remain a fact is that if drivers mix marijuana with other substances, such as alcohol, prescription drugs, or other illegal drugs, accidents do occur. Prescription drugs, mainly pain killers and muscle relaxants and benzodiazepines (a sedative), are most often linked to accidents caused by drug impairment.

Drugs will affect every driver differently, and often times drivers have mixed substances, so it is difficult to determine exactly how someone might be affected while behind the wheel. Swerving, impaired reaction time, decreased coordination, reckless and aggressive driving, and lane weaving are common signs someone is driving while impaired.
